Antique Victorian long pin with a snake winding around a cabochon garnet. Made in England approx 1840 - 1880.

Total length of pin is slightly more than 3 1/2 inches. The section from the end to the snake's head is just under 1 inch in length.

Long, flattened pin with a twisted section in the center. At the end is an egg-shaped cabochon garnet encircled by a twining snake. Fabulous, sensuous and very lovely to look at. No hallmarks, but tested for 9carat gold. Good condition.

The Victorians loved snake jewelry - Queen Victoria wore snake jewelry at her first opening of Parliament and was given a piece of snake jewelry by her beloved Prince Albert. The rest of the population emulated everything she did and snake jewelry, with it's symbolism, especially of eternity, particularly appealed to them.
