Relief moulded. Taken from a Victorian home, pair of wall / fireplace tile plaque depicting a peacock nesting in a blossom tree. Much in the Arts And Crafts taste. Made in England, circa 1880-90. Factory signed on the back.
Each tile measures 6 X 6 inches.
Together the tiles depict a magnificent peacock sitting in the branches of a very Japanese looking blossom tree. The Victorian, Arts and Crafts admiration for the Japanese is clearly shown . Beautiful detail to the moulding of the bird and background - gently relief moulded and wonderful tonality of warm, deep colours.
Marked on the back with the factory name: RICHARDS ENGLAND. Also, a number of other raised marks and numbers - some shown in photos.
Tiles are in good, original condition with crazing typical of English ceramics of that age.
Clear evidence that tiles were actually removed from their original setting and some commensurate wear on the back, not visible in front of tiles.
