<td width="100%">
Early Victorian French fan handpainted and set with wonderful tiny star-shaped sequins.
Guard is approx 9 inches long.
Sticks and guards are made of mother of pearl, embossed with scrolling foliage and flowers in gold and silver (the silver has darkened). The sticks are held together by a meatal loop with immitation gemstone citrine buttons / studds.
The leaf has a marvellous handpainted scene. A couple and two ladies walk over a river bank. A gentleman, his hat strewn aside, kneeling on the ground to cast his fishing rod. Beautifully painted forest trees in the background. The stylish young women are beautifully painted. Behind them, a pair of peasants lean over the fence, watching the activity below. Along the sides of the leaf are associated vignettes: a fishing net and baskets as well as knap sack. On the left is a wonderfuly painted mass of purple irises. Presumably, their was some symbolic connection. They are interspersed with very tiny, star-shaped gold spangles / sequins and tiny, delicately painted scrolling foliage. There is a silk corded tassle at the bottom handle of fan.
Condition of all parts of the fan is very good. The gauze at the back of the fan is splitting somewhat, but the fabric of the painting is in great shape, as are sticks and guards.
