VERY SCARCE AND DESIRABLE JAPANESE WW2 NAGOYA

TYPE 2 PARATROOP BOLT ACTION MILITARY RIFLE WITH CORRECT BAYONET. Cal. 7.7 Jap. S# 4623. All visible numbers match. Bbl. 25 1/2". Ladder aperture rear sight with anti aircraft wings. Inverted V front sight with protective ears. This rare rifle was made to arm Japanese airborne troops and was designed to be broken down into a compact package for parachute operations. Starting late in 1943 approximately 22,000 of these rifles were made. This nice example has correct early features, matching numbers and a large degree of original finish. Receiver has crisp mum and characters for "Type2". The left receiver rail has S# and Nagoya Arsenal marking, and also carries the matching number for the takedown parts. This number which is present on both sides of the takedown as well as the locking screw and barrel, rarely if ever matches the rifle serial number. Straight bolt handle with oval knob. Checkered notched safety knob. Correct matching sliding dust cover. Brown leather unmarked sling with snap rear swivel attachment and steel buckle adjustment. 21 3/8" cleaning rod. Three screw upper band. Open top lower band which does not have the mono pod base as mono pods were not used on these rifles. Hardwood stock set with long handguard. Two piece buttstock construction with cup type buttplate and two screw sling swivel. UNATTACHED ACCESORIES: 7 7/8" fullered blade paratroop bayonet with straight cross guard and smooth hardwood grips. Bayonet serial 5111. Steel scabbard and correct leather frog. Bayonet and scabbard have most of their original finish with light wear. The finish is over a professional sharpening. The frog has wear and flexing but stitching is tight. CONDITION: The stock set has moderate wear and handling marks. The original finish has been given a light coat of additional finish likely to prevent further flaking. The metal retains a very large degree of original blue with light wear and handling marks. Near excellent shiny bore. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (23-100/RW). CURIO. $2,500-4,000.
