POINT D-GUARD BOWIE KNIFE. When photographing knives for “Confederate Bowie Knives, 2012” only 6 or 7 examples of this clip point bowie could be identified whereas hundreds of the standard dbl. edge cutlasses are known. This exact knife is shown on pg 78 of 2012 text "Confederate Bowie Knives" misidentified as NC product. This is a fine classic example once thought made by Louis Froelich at his Confederate States Armory in Kenansville, NC. Discover of an example maker marked "Burger & Brothers Richmond, VA" confirms these are products of Richmond, VA, Maker - Burger. Accompanying research file substantiates that his is a product of Richmond maker Burger & Bros. This example conforms to the other few examples measuring 20” overall w/ 14 3/4” clip point blade, 1 5/8” wide, 1/4” thick & fine beveling on portions of top edge. One piece wood grip has flattened sides seen on other examples. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: research file as noted above. CONDITION: good to very good overall; blade shows old sharpening & mottled dark gray/brown patina w/ pitting, guard has matching iron patina & wood grip has hand worn patina.
