VERY FINE PAIR OF GEORGIAN STYLE CARVED MAHOGANY VITRINE CABINETS English. Late 19th Century. Each square case with glass top above glass sides and glazed door supported by the base carved with shells, raised on cabriole legs. Height 78". Width 28 3/4". Depth 27 3/4". Provenance: J. Rochelle Thomas, London and Palm Beach.The present lot represents two vitrines from a series of ten conceived of rich mahogany and curved glass in upright and low horizontal form. The group belonged to the world renowned antique porcelain dealers, J. Rochelle Thomas, located at 14 King Street, St. James, London. Established in 1859 and until recent times the gallery was noted for the outstanding quality of export and early English porcelain. They also carried the Royal Warrant for the late Queen Mary and H. M. Queen Elizabeth. In 1947 Buckingham Palace requested the cabinets on loan for St. James Palace to exhibit some of the wedding gifts of Elizabeth II to Prince Philip. Several cabinets were sold by Christie's in London. The two current ones were shipped to the U.S. for the gallery which was located on Worth Avenue in Palm Beach.
