VERY FINE EXPORT GILT CHINOISERIE DECORATED BLACK LACQUER BONHEUR DU JOUR Chinese. Early 19th Century. In two parts. The upper part with swan neck pediment centered by the initial "W" above a pair of cupboard doors opening to the interior fitted with shelves, small drawers and cupboards. The lower projected stand with fold over writing surface and slide tablet above a long drawer, raised on baluster legs joined by a pierced platform stretcher centered by a marble plaque. Height 66 1/4". Width 27 3/4". Depth 20 1/4". Provenance: Edith & Maude Wetmore, Newport, R.I. Sale: Parke-Bernet Galleries, Sept. 16-18, 1969, Lot 1002, on the premises of Chateau-Sur-Mer built in 1851-52 by Seth Bradford, a local Newport contractor for William S. Wetmore. It is an important example of the massive "cottage villas" built in Newport during the 1850's. The contents of Chateau-Sur-Mer offered for sale in the 1969 auction included many of the original furnishings which were put in the house at the time of its construction and stayed with successive generations of the Wetmore family.$3,500/5,500
