VERDI, GIUSEPPE
331. GIUSEPPE VERDI (1813 - 1901) Italian composer who helped develop opera into a fully integrated art form, his works include Il Travatore, La Traviata, Aida, and Don Carlos, to name but a few. Fine content, early A.L.S. "G. Verdi", 1p. 8vo., Milan, May 12, 1844 to musician Carlo Montanari in Parma. Verdi expresses uncertainties about the upcoming season, asking Montanari to keep him apprised of Verdi's choice of singers and whether they intent to keep control of the score or to cede it to him. Verdi also asks about the chances of Montanari playing at a theater in Rome, as Verdi had not definitively heard whether or not an orchestra seat was available for his correspondent. A spot in an orchestra in Florence is mentioned, but Montanari's pay would be but six lire per day, commensurate with what comparable musicians are being paid in the same locale. With integral address leaf and a CDV photo of the composer, overall very good. $3,000-4,000
