Cloth relic of the face of Jesus Christ from the Veil of St. Veronica, 4 3/4" x 7", a high-quality lithograph printing on linen of the face of Jesus with cloth veil surrounding, by Bano Piazza Nicosia, Rome, 1879. Printed in Latin beneath the image is the inscription: "True Image of the Face of Our Lord Jesus Christ" with both red wax seal of the archbishop responsible for St. Peter's Basilica at the time of printing, and blue Vatican stamped ink seal. Also included is a lengthy authentication document, 1p. 12mo., 1897, signed by Msgr. O. Cagiano, with red wax seal. According to tradition, Veronica saw Jesus on his way top Calvary and used her veil to clean His face. When she took it back, His facial imprint was left upon the cloth. After the Shroud of Turin, this is the second most famous image of the face of Christ. Since the eighth century this relic has been stored under the altar at St. Peter's. In 1849 Pius IX ordered an artist to reproduce the image. A small number were printed, all on linen, and touched against the original, as was this relic.
