VANESSA BEECROFT (Italian, b. 1969) VB 35, SOLOMON R. GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM, NEW YORk Vibracolor print 65 x 49 1/4 in. (165 x 125 cm) 1998 this print is from an edition of 3 PROVENANCE Galerie Ghislaine Hussenot, Paris Galerie Rodolphe Janssen, BRUSSELS Galerie Patrick de Brock, KNOKKE, BELGIUM Private Collection, BRUSSELS LITERATURE Dave Hickey, VB 08-36: VANESSA BEECROFT PERFORMANCES, Ostfildern, 2000, pp. 139-149 (Guggenheim performance illustrated; p. 147 variant of this image illustrated) Vanessa Beecroft circulated the statement "Beauty creates shame" during SHOW at New York's Guggenheim Museum. But as models in Gucci bikinis refused to meet the spectators' gaze, it was unclear whether Beecroft really intended a post-feminist critique of the catwalk. The recent extension of Beecroft's work to the military domain implies that hers is a wider concern with the search for individuality in a sea of uniformity. "I want women on heels because that's powerful, that's not natural nudity or pureness," she explains. "When men see this woman standing on heels as if she were dressed, and facing the audience, well, if that's what they like to see, then here it is, so what. I don't know if that will create more respect or go somewhere beyond that. Maybe after they see it twenty times they'll start not to think of it the same way, I'm not sure. It's an experiment."
