Measures 13 3/4" x 8 3/4" mounted on a tan matte that measures 15" x 10 1/2". Unidentified photographer. An image of a very large undocumented coal mine with a railroads and various groups of miners and ore carts throughout the mine. A brief note written at the bottom of the matte is, "N.G.R.R. Yard & Old Dads(sp?) Mine from near(new) Elijah Rear of Camp N.V. on hill". Rail lines were called narrow gauge because they measured less than the standard ones. Common carriers of narrow gauge railroads were agricultural, industrial, lumber, military, quarrying, and tunneling. They were built as primarily industrial railways, that went much slower, and of course had a smaller capacity. Photograph has yellowing along the sky, and a 1 inch tear at the bottom. Dark stains at the left of the matte, and slightly along the edges with minor foxing throughout. Focus and contrast are both high, where the wooden shingles on tope of the roofs and details on ore carts are easily depicted.
