Incorporated in the State of Virginia. Certificate No. 354 issued for 50 shares to John Thornely. Datelined Philadelphia, May, 1854. Vignette of allegorical woman at center top seated, leaning against a trunk, watching a factory with a smoking chimney. Vignette at top left is an eagle with a shield, arrows, and an olive branch in its talons. Vignette at center left is a warrior standing atop a fallen king, while Washington's head is at bottom left. A small vignette of miners working underground is at center bottom. Black border and print. U/C, measuers 10" x 6". Located one mile east of Mineral, in Louisa Co., VA. The Slate Hill mine was first opened in 1850, and was worked extensively at first. It joins the Luce mine on the southwest, of which it formed a part. Two veins were developed to a depth of 150 ft. According to a report done in 1853, the average ore was given at $4/ton. In 1895 a Huntington Mill was erected. The Luce & Slate mines were worked as late as 1895 [Ref: EMJ, 1881 & 1887. Mineral Resources of VA, 1907, Watson, p. 599]. Foldlines, otherwise very fine.
