Ute Toy Cradleboard
Ute Toy Cradleboard
Circa 1880.
Length 21 1/2 in.

This classic miniature is made with native tanned hide covering the wood backboard. The cradle is beaded in lazy stitch with geometric designs in a semi-circular band across the top. A doll made of muslin fits into the pouch. The hide covering has been painted with yellow ochre indicating it was intended for a girl. It is fringed at the bottom and along the top on the reverse. This toy cradle is a finely detailed model of the full sized examples prevalent in Ute culture.
