The lot features an exceptional fully beaded flat bag or mirror pouch from the Ute Native American Indian tribe dating to circa 1880. The flat bag features an Indian tanned hide construction with wonderful traditional beaded design on the front and back. The beadwork is done in the correct 19th Century period glass trade seed beads in colors such as Chalk White, Greasy Yellow, Medium Blue, Medium Green and Semi-Transparent Red. The piece also shows a fancy beaded outer edge in padre sky blue and a very unique top design showing four fancy beaded flaps. Early authentic Ute Indian beaded flat bags are very scarce with only a few examples being brought to sale in this high of craftsmanship and age such as the Ute Tail 19th Century bag that sold for $2,737 at the 4/30/2016 North American Auction sale, the Ute Pipe Bag that sold for $4,612.50 at the 8/15/2015 Altermann Galleries & Auctioneers sale, the Ute Beaded Mirror Bag that sold for $2,400 at the Cowan’s Auction 4/12/2012 sale, and the Ute Beaded flat bag that sold for $1,347.50 at the 9/24/2011 Skinner’s Auction sale. Provenance: From a historic private museum collection in Paris, France. The Ute beaded pouch shows fine museum quality good condition for its age. It measures 3.25" x 4".
