Unusual late Wheelock rifle with brass cannon type barrel and enclosed wheel, probably German, circa early 18th century. The barrel measures 31-1/4” is cast of naval brass and shows a reinforced cannon type ringed breechto rings on forward portion of barrel with flared cannon type muzzle in 54 cal rifled. The stock terminates behind first band and was made this way and not altered. The stock is good quality walnut with a burl grain and quality raised carving. The lock is lightly engraved and shows a Germanic type face on the hammer. The trigger guard is simple iron and the patch box is horn and wood. The lock and mounts show a deep patina and someminor pitting and at least very good. The stock is very good plus with just normal aging and sharp carving. The brass barrel shows a medium patina. A very interesting late Wheelock transitioning into the timeframe when Blunderbuss’s were beginning. An interesting and rare Wheelock. Last sold Richard K. Bourne auctioneer for James Elwood Jones collection 1981. From an old N.Y. collector’s estate. Est.;$3,500-$7,000.
