Unusual American clip point Bowie knife, circa 1835-1860, showing 7-1/2" blade, 12-1/2" overall, with period scabbard, rosewood grip, German silver guard and mounts with marine ivory pommel cap inlaid withamber. The blade shows a wreath engraved on each side with a small stamp of a Union Shield and a circular dot on left, and just a dot on right, which are stamped and engraved in the blade and were some sort of a makersmark. The blade is in very good to near fine condition, with most of its original polish, small loss at the tip and its full original dimensions. The hilt is lightly engraved on both sides, the rosewood grips show somesimple border decoration that is very American. The marine ivory pommel cap shows a good patina, some cracking and normal aging. The scabbard is in good condition and shows German silver mounts and appears to be original with the knife. A very interesting knife that has a New England look, of the type that may have been used by seamen or whalers. Est.: $1,250-$2,500
