Unmarked Confederate Artillery Sword

This example is patterned after the U.S. Model 1832 Enlisted Artillery Sword, devoid of identifying markings, as is typical of many of the smaller producers of weapons and equipment to the Confederate States of America. (Experts attribute this type of sword to W.J. McElroy of Macon, Georgia.) Measuring 24 1/2 inches in overall length, the thick double edged blade is 19 inches long, tapering in and then flaring slightly just ahead of the base. The hilt is solid cast brass, with a disc-quillion guard, deep grip ribbing, and a slightly flared pommel.

Good overall. The blade shows a mixed brown and gray patina overall, with a number of dings along the edge and significant play in the grip; while it is impossible to say if this blade was used in combat during the Civil War, several of the dings appear consistent with edge-on-edge contact with another blade, and looseness of the fittings would be a natural consequence of heavy use. The brass shows a mixed aged color, with some casting voids on the guard.
