Unique one-of-a-kind custom deluxe engraved and 24 K gold inlaid Colt SAA revolver, 44-40 cal., 5-1/2” barrel, blue and case hardened finish, FACTORY inscribed on back strap “Al DeJohn, Manager – Colt Custom Shop 1946 to 1989”and on the butt strap “Engraving Compliments of R.L. Wilson for his olde friend Al DeJohn”, scrimshawed ivory grips, #Sam Colt 1. This gun is in overall like new condition with fancy scroll engraving by the famous Master Leonard Francolini and beautifully accomplished scrimshawed grips by Master engraver Dennis Kies of a bust of Samuel Colt on the left side of the one piece grips and a colorized scrimshaw of the Colt factory dome on the right side of the grips. The barrel is double gold inlaid banded, the barrel address is inlaid gold, the etched left side of the barrel is also a gold panel with “Colt Frontier Six Shooter”; the cylinder is gold banded, the top of the frame has Francolini’s signature as the engraver in the sight groove; there is an unbelievably accurate and detailed gold inlay of the Rampant Colt on the left recoil shield and a beautiful gold flower on the loading gate. A copy of a Colt factory letter is included dated March 25, 1992 confirming caliber, barrel length and shipment to Al DeJohn at the Custom Shop of Colt Firearms on August 18, 1989, one gun in shipment. The remarks section of the letter note “ . . . that this revolver was returned to the factory on September 6, 1989 for further customizing which consisted of the following: Custom scroll engraving of approximately ½ coverage, 24K gold inlaid wide and thin bands on cylinder, rear of barrel, and ejector tube, a gold inlaid thin barrel band at the muzzle of the barrel, gold inlaid Rampant Cot on the recoil shield, gold inlaid floral design on the loading gate, a gold inlaid bar inscribed with the engraver’s name on the top of the frame. The backstrap was inscribed ‘Al DeJohn, Manager – Colt Custom Shop 1946-1989’. The butt of the revolver was inscribed ‘Engraving Compliments of R. L. Wislon For his Olde Friend Al DeJohn’. The engraving was performed by Master Engraver Leonard Francolini. At this time the revolver was also fitted with scrimshawed ivory stocks. The left stock was scrimshawed with a portrait of Sam Colt and the right stock was scrimshawed with a Colt Dome motif. The scrimshaw was performed by Master Engraver Dennis Kies. The embellishment of this firearm was provided with the compliments of R. L. Wilson and presented to Al DeJohn on the occasion of his retirement from Colt Firearms. The special work was processed on Repair Order Number 219974C. We trust the information supplied above will be of interest. Sincerely, Kathleen J. Hoyt, Historian”. There is also included with this piece, a copy of a letter from R. L.
