Unique Variation of the Springfield Model 1847 Sappers Percussion Musketoon with Sling

This Musketoon has the unique Sappers double lug bayonet guide mounted on the right side of the barrel muzzle, however the forward barrel band is absent of the bayonet lug. The lock is marked "SPRING/FIELD/1853" behind the hammer and the eagle shield motif over "US". The left breech end of the barrel is marked with the "V/P/eagle head" proofmarks. Iron trumpet head ramrod, two-piece trigger guard and mounted with a full straight grip walnut stock with "US" marked buttplate tang and leather sling. These Musketoons were unpopular with troops and officers because not only did they kick like a mule, they also suffered from a variety of breakage problems. This may account for the reason they are often found with replacement parts.

Good. The metal surfaces have a mottled gray patina with moderate flash pitting on the breech end of the barrel and bolster and some light pitting on the hammer and lock. The buttplate shows some oxidation. The revarnished stock is good with some minor dents and scratches. The sling is good with normal age and flex cracking. The action functions, but does not stay at full cock. The markings are clear.
