This is an example of a Union Switch and Signal Experimental/Presentation Model 1911A1 made during WWII. This pistol was originally owned by an employee of the Union Switch and Signal company who acquired it after WWII. This pistol is also accompanied by letters form the original consignor who acquired the pistol from the relative of the employee along with a one page letter of endorsement by Charles Clawson, the noted author on the Model 1911 and Model 1911A1 pistol book. Mr. Clawson notes in his letter that this pistol "Serial Number No.1" falls in the general guidelines for this type of presentation pistol. He has noted this same information on similar pistols which he has listed in his data base. Originally only "100" total of these early pistols were produced and were intended as internal test or experimental pistols. Later they were finished, assembled, and handmarked and then presented as gifts to US Army Ordnance Officers, and high ranking employees of the US&S company directly after WWII. Mr. Clawson notes in his endorsement that these pistol have been documented as having both blued and parkerized finishes, with and without slide markings with the hand stamped markings and serial numbers of different sizes. This was primarily due to the fact that these pistols were all hand assembled by different company employees or machinist. In his endorsement letter Mr. Clawson lists only "12" of the approximately 100 pistols of this type that were actually produced, making this a very rare, low production example. This pistol has a dull, dulite blue finish, with the hand stamped markings on the right side of the pistol. The slide does not have any of the normal factory markings, again which is consistent with this series of pistol. The right side of the slide in front of the serrations and the frame area directly below that are hand stamped with "US&S CO./EXP No.1", with no other markings anywhere. It has the standard WWII manufactured parts as follows; a blued "HS" marked High Standard barrel, blued and checkered slide stop, thumb safety and arched mainsprings housing, and a set of Keyes Fibre marked, brown checkered plastic grips. It is complete with one original WWII all blued magazine that has the small letter "S" on the front lip of the base plate.
BBL: 5 inch round

The grips show some light wear and handling marks in a few places, but have no cracks or damage anywhere. A very nice example of a super rare US&S Factory Presentation Model 1911A1 "Serial Number 1".
