Unique Spanish Copy of a Winchester Model 1873 Carbine
F. D'Suzanne was the designer of the Model '73 Spanish Carbine. He secured the early Spanish contracts and introduced T.E. Addis to the officials who were to place the orders and test the Model '73s. D'Suzanne was instrumental in establishing dealers and distributors of the Henry rifle and Model 1866 and 1873 in France and Switzerland. He accompanied O.F. Winchester at the German, Swiss, Spanish and Turkish trials prior to 1875 and brought Addis to Spain. These carbines have a full stock like the Model 1876 carbine with an iron forend tip, single barrel band with spring retainer, fixed front sight and folding rear sight graduated to 800 meters and 5" saddle ring bar mounted on the left side of the frame with saddle ring. The dust cover rail is secured by two screws and the dust cover has a checkered oval at the front. The upper tang is marked "ARTILLERIA / OVIEDO 1892" and the right rear of the stock is stamped "1090". There is a small "CP" in an oval on the left side of the barrel band and a small "MR" in an oval on lower tang. No other markings are visible. In late years (1880s early 1890s), the carbine was copied by the Royal Arms Factory in Oviedo, and after that the Royal Arms Factory copies were manufactured in Eibar, Spain.

The buttplate has a dark patina. The wood has been freshened with a coat of varnish some time ago and still retains most of the finish, with overall minor dents, dings and scratches. The markings are clear. The action is very good.
