The exact circumstances behind the development and construction of this weapon are unknown, but evidence suggests that this was formerly a revolving rifle, possibly Middle Eastern or Indian in origin that was professionally converted into a handgun. Produced without sights, with the barrel turned down to create a smooth taper to a cannon muzzle and the lug serving as the mounting point for the frizzen arm. The six-round cylinder is equipped with independent flashpans for each chamber, with sliding covers, and spins freely when a spring loaded catch mounted on the left side of the frame is depressed. Lockplate is unmarked, with a dog-leg safety catch and a curled accent on the trigger. Fitted with a smooth stock, with raised carved border accents around the upper tang and lock, terminating in a smooth brass buttcap. The rapid downward turn of the stock behind the triggerguard suggests that it was formerly a jezail-pattern weapon. Provenance: The William Ashby Collection
BBL: 8 3/4 inch part octagon
