Unique Prototype DWM Model 1906 American Eagle Luger Pistol with Experimental Safety Key Slot Side

Estimate: $5500 - 7500
This is a very unique example of a beautiful Model 1906 "American Eagle" Luger as produced by DWM factory. In addition, this Luger has a very unique and maybe one of a kind, experimental type safety key slot in the two-piece side plate. The lower half of the side plate although removable in the normal fashion, it is spring loaded, via a small traverse pin/plunger, that is fitted directly behind the takedown latch. While the top half of the side plate is pinned in place, to the side of the barrel extension, in front of the sear bar. The barrel is not rifled, most likely because the pistol was intended for demonstrating the aforementioned safety, not firing. The barrel is also matching numbered to the barrel extension and has a single "Crown N" commercial proof. The actual method or purpose of the two-piece side plate, milled/machined key slot and smooth bored barrel is completely unknown? The chamber area has the "American Eagle" crest with the DWM logo on the toggle with the "Crown N" commercial proofs. This model has the correct short style frame and upper receiver, fast taper 4 7/8 inch barrel configuration, grip safety, and polished lower safety area with the correctly marked, "LOADED" extractor. Numbered in the commercial style with full serial number (67098) stamped on the underside of the barrel and front of the frame with the last two digits of the serial number (98) stamped on the various small parts. The front end of the frame is stamped "GERMANY" indicating export outside of Europe. It is complete with one all blue WWII magazine with the aluminum base marked, "3389/k/Eagle63". This is a unique variation and is certainly worth doing further research on.

The walnut grips are both in excellent condition overall with nice distinct checkering with minimal handling marks. The pistol has all matching numbers except the magazine. A very unusual early pre-war 1906 Luger pistol.
