Unique Pre-War Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 Bolt Action Rifle
This rifle has a hooded front sight and a Lyman receiver peep sight with the rear sight removed (dovetail slot with filler block). The cloverleaf receiver has the front ring drilled and tapped for scope mounts and has a typical "L" shaped late safety that was fitted on Model 70s beginning in 1948. Note that the rear receiver bridge has a stripper clip guide and no mounting screw holes. Standard barrel and left receiver wall markings with no visible factory proofs. The serial number appears hand done as it is not in the same Model 70 style numerals (possibly indicating factory rework). The hinged floor plate features a stag and oak leaf engraving done in a punch style with the area in front of the floor plate filled, indicating that stock was made for an another floor plate with longer tang like the Model 54. The left side of the stock is notched for a receiver sight other than the present Lyman peep sight and the stock features a checkering pattern not typical to the Model 70, with a slight flared pistol grip, a Model 70 style forend but thinner and a checkered steel widow's peak buttplate. The unusual features (stripper clip guide) and low hand stamped serial number cause speculation as a tool room prototype or employee rifle. More research should be done on this unique Winchester Model 70.

Possibly factory refinished (see above). The rifle retains over 98% blue finish with mild thinning and limited light spotting near the muzzle with some pin prick pitting contained to the barrel. There is dried lubricant in the action. The refinished stock has some scattered light dings and scratches with some mild dings in the overall crisp checkering.
