Unique Magician's Trick Pistol
Manufactured circa 1830-1850 and fitted with a "G. Golcher" lock, this pistol is designed to look like a functional percussion gun with a massive bore, when in fact the "barrel" is just a brass tube, with the percussion nipple connected to the lower, true barrel, which is disguised as a ramrod cutout. A number of tricks could be performed with this arm, the most popular being the shooting ball trick. The performer would ask for a volunteer from the audience, when the volunteer came on stage the magician would ask him to scratch his or hers initials on a ball. The magician would then take the ball back for the participate and ask them to pour the powder into the large barrel, while this is going on the magician "palms" the initialed ball and drops another ball into the barrel after the powder is poured in. He then asks the volunteer to use a ram rod and pack the ball and powder. The magician then tells the audience that he is going to shoot the ball at his lovely assistant and that she will catch the ball in her teeth. The magician fires at the assistant, there's and loud bang and big puff of smoke, she falls backward onto the ground from the impact of catching the ball in her mouth, the magician runs to her aid, rubbing her face, head and hand all the while slipping the ball into her mouth. When the assistant comes to, the magician removes the ball from her mouth and gives it to the volunteer, asking them, "is this the ball you scratched your initials into" and of course it is, and the trick is completed to the amazement of the crowd. The replaced ball remains safely in the barrel because the lower barrel was pre loaded with powder and was actually the barrel that was fired causing the big puff of smoke and noise. The lock is engraved, with "G. GOULCHER" banner, a brass trigger guard, silver finished round disc on top of the wrist, and a flared butt with decorative grooves.
