Unique Engraved Gold Banded English Blissett Combination Flintlock and Percussion Rifle

This unique rifle features both a flintlock and percussion ignition system. A pivoting flash pan and percussion bolster are mounted on the lock ahead of the flintlock frizzen and spring assembly. The lower portion of the hammer is percussion and serves as the lower vise jaw for the upper flintlock mechanism. There is a set screw on the bottom of the flash pan/bolster which is used to lock the mechanism into place depending on which system you are using. The side of the flash pan is marked "PATENT". The lock is marked "F BLISSETT/LONDON" and the top of the barrel at the breech is marked "F BLISSETT/LEADENHALL ST./LONDON." There are two gold inlaid bands on the upper three flats at the rear of the breech plug and the barrel tang is engraved with a bears head and floral scroll engraving. The rear of the lock is engraved with a lying deer in a field scene. The barrel is fitted with a dovetailed blade front and two leaf, (one fixed, one folding), rear sights. Rifled barrel with full solid under rib with two ramrod pipes securing the brass tipped wooden ramrod. There is a sling swivel mounted on the forward pipe. The trigger guard has a grip extension and is engraved with a hunting dog on point in a field scene on the bow and "1725" on the end of the extension. Mounted with a walnut half stock with checkered wrist, cheekpiece, iron buttplate and patch box. The buttplate has a 4 1/2 inch heel extension engraved with a deer in a field scene. The patch box has two compartments with an ivory divider. The patch box door is engraved with two deer in a field scene and the attaching iron is floral scroll engraved.

Condition: Very good. The metal surfaces have a smooth mottled gray patina. The refinished stock is fair showing some moderate wear in the checkering and scattered minor dents and dings associated with a gun of this age. All of the gold inlay remains. The markings and engraving are clear. Mechanically excellent. A very unique combination flintlock/percussion rifle, the first writer has ever seen.
