Unique 1912 Roosevelt & Johnson Jugate Poster
Roosevelt & Johnson: A Rare Jugate Item For This 1912 Bull Moose Ticket. Items from TR's 1912 third party candidacy are highly prized, particularly those which depicts him with his running mate, Hiram Johnson of California. The present item is a double-sided, poster-sized advertising sheet offering massive banners that would stretch all the way across a street. The elements shown in color were attached to a strong mesh backing, so that when viewed at any distance, each element appeared to float freely in the air. These giant banners seemed to have been introduced during the 1880 campaign, as similar advertising sheets have been found for most of the presidential tickets between 1880 and 1912. We have even encountered a small, salesman's sample version for the two 1896 tickets. Despite the many advertising flyers and period photographs depicting these banners stretched across city streets, only a very few examples of the banners themselves have survived, probably owing to their huge size and fragile construction. Of all the similar flyers we have encountered, this Roosevelt-Johnson version is in the largest size, and clearly the most important of the group because of the rarity of the ticket depicted. Condition is beautiful with one trivial small edge chip at the top noted for accuracy. There are several fine fold lines, as issued. The piece itself measures 22" x 14", and it has been professional matted and framed to the dimensions of 30" x 23". This is the only example we have ever encountered, and was parted with only reluctantly by one of the hobby's leading connoisseurs of political display items.

Shipping: Framed (view shipping information)
