Union Veteran's Post-War Diary Mentions Grant. Two late 19th century pocket diaries belonging to Union veteran Frank D. Bangs and a 1955 photo album pertaining to his descendants. Bangs enlisted in Co. "B", 1st Connecticut Heavy Artillery on May 22, 1861 and mustered out of the service as a captain on September 25, 1865. He must have made important connections during the war because his 1881 pocket diary records several meetings with General Grant. Bangs was seeking help from the ex-president to secure a political appointment. A typical entry, here January 27, 1881, reads, "...Met Genl Grant...by appointment had full conference with him and received his letter addressed to W.A. Cole asking that my appointment be made as Secy...". The second Bangs diary is from 1893 and records routine information such as the weather and expenses. Both diaries have worn covers as expected, yet remain internally fresh. Additionally there is a photograph album circa 1953-1962 belonging to a John R. Bangs, obviously a descendent of Frank Bangs. The album contains wedding photos, post cards, etc.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
