26mm. This rare, Post Civil War produced “Dog Tag” is Holed at top for suspension as always. Stamped into a GAR Medallion, “DAVID A. WELCH, 50TH N.Y. ENGINEERS CIVIL WAR. 1861 - 1865”. Welch was a Civil War Veteran that served in the 50th N.Y. Infantry. After the war, this Regiment was re-designated as the 50th Engineers. This regiment was raised in Elmira, New York as the 50th Infantry and was later changed to the 50th Engineers. Blank reverse. The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was a fraternal organization composed of veterans of the Union Army, US Navy, Marines and Revenue Cutter Service who served in the American Civil War. Founded in 1866 in Decatur, Illinois, it was dissolved in 1956 when its last member died. The first of this use and type we have offered.
