[Union] Superb Letter About Baltimore Readying For an Invasion, Including News of "Negroes" Being Forced to Erect Breastworks. Autograph Letter Signed, in the hand of one Clara, to "Mother Hall" in Charleston, 6 pages, 5" by 8", Baltimore, June 21, 1863. In fine condition. With typed transcription. Had we but time and space enough, we would gladly run this fascinating letter in its entirety: as it is, some highlights... "Baltimore never was so busy before... The whole place is up in arms getting ready for the Rebels... Our streets were guarded all night and our pickets extend about five miles out of the City... Last night the whole of the 'Union League' were given their arms, the 'Minute Men' were given theirs and all the known Loyal men were supplied... The Rebs here say we are marked, but they little know what is in store for them. Whole lists of names of Secesh here are being made out and are soon to go in to Genl. Schenek and ... every Secesh family is to be sent South... The police were catching all the negroes and idlers and marching them to the outskirts of the City and putting them to work on the entrenchments. They are kept at work day and night and tomorrow they talk of closing all the places of business and putting every one out to work... When the news first came that the Rebs were going to make a dash on the place, the Secesh around were very jubilant, but now they look white around the mouth.... I am going to pack up my silver and send it on... for I haven't any idea that the Rebs shall enjoy anything belonging to me... The Union people are..half crazy to get a chance at some of those sneaking Rebs around us..." From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
