Letter from an unidentified Union soldier working on a ship docked at City Point, Virginia during the second battle there. Written in ink and datelined ''Sitty Point Sept 2th 1864,'' soldier writes to his wife: ''…I am tired of this place I am nere lonsome. I am quite…wourade about the draft it seems to me tho I should be drafted and if I am I dont know as I can get clear it will so long before I get to boston that I am afraid that thay will catch me. The old cock mite report me he is mean old…but he is in a hard place he has got to go…out to Grants front in the morning, the Capt was out there this week and the rebs fired at him, one ball went so near him that he could see the blow of it. He went so as to hear the rebs talk that was near enuf…The Capt said that…the ground was covered with balls he brought abord his pockets full…there laws here are very stricked…thay arested one man here for pickin up soup out of the whater. I tride to buy a pair of shoes her thay ask 8 dollars a pair so I think I will go bare foot…some times I have a good mind to go enlist for fear I will be drafted if I should I would get my bounty but if I am drafted and thay get me all I shall get is my monthly pay but I hate to leave you so long and I mite get killed…'' Letter measures 5'' x 8'' and runs 3pp. Mild toning, foxing and three small holes torn along center crease, otherwise very good condition.
