4pp. letter from Union soldier to his wife. Ink letter datelined ''Army of Potomick / December 5th 1864'' reads in part: ''…it is nice and warm here so that the flies are lively here. we have moved twice since we got to the army on tuesday last we heard that we had to move so we all stoped building our houses and waited til evening when the 9th Corps came in there and took our place there and we fell back about a mile and laid in the field til morning…if the wether keeps so nice we look some for a other move further towards the rail road on the south sid of petersburg and richmond and if we do we expect a heavy fight. the cavelry was over there last week its about 12 miles and took 180 prisoners some canons and two large siege guns spiked them and cut the wagons to pieces, burnt a trane of cars and a station and 5 or 6 houses and got back safe so that we did not have to go to help them but if it should rain soon we will not move again this winter. some of the boys is wishing hard for rain to make the roads so that they cant move the artilery. then they think we will have rest for the winter…'' Letter measures 4.75'' x 7.75''. Slight tears along fold lines, otherwise excellent condition.
