Pencil letter dated 22 June 1863 and reads in part: ''…I have been reading your note write before you received mine had you never received my note and mailed those letters to me my heart would not beat and throb within this breast as it does this moment now I would be happy knowing too these lines would be welcomed by one very near and dear to me but one word has caused a gloom over all. I know you to well so I would bet you too are sad. yes I know one word wrongly spoken even without a meaning cuts like a knife at your heart…I have spared no pains to inform you I loved you and wished you more than a friend the manner in which I asked you to give yourself to me sounds about ruff and rude. Nellie where are you going to spend the fourth of July. I wish I could be with you but maybe that ideal will come around perhaps you will enjoy yourself better than you would with me. I shall have a nice time if I don't get killed. The committe of arrangements have give me the charge of the canon…'' Measures 5'' x 8''. Pinholes, otherwise fine condition.
