Letter from Union soldier M.W. Herbey to his wife. Written in ink and dated 12 November 1862, Herbey writes from the Mississippi aboard a Cairo bound steamer: ''…We have middling hard times on the boat, for they are so heavy loaded with freight, that there be no chance for having things as we had ought to have. We are getting along very slow…I don't know what it means, they manage the boat so queer. I don't know but there is some trap laid to have us taken prisoners, but I hope this is not the case. We have not got to Cairo yet. We have ought to been to Cairo 2 days ago, but are not there yet. We are landed on the shore now. The boat is taking on wood for the engine. We was all launched last night to walk about 1 mile so the boat could get over the sand bar. She stuck on it for some time and we built a fire in the woods and stayed there a hour while it was raining. It then got cold…We are 20 miles from Cairo now. I thought it best to write before we got there, so I could leave it there. I am looking for a letter when I get there from you. I hope there will be one or more for me there…'' Letter measures 5'' x 8'' and runs 2pp. Mild overall foxing and chipping to edges; separation at folds repaired by tape, otherwise very good condition.
