Interesting pair of letters related to the situation of Orlando R. Chamberlain, a Union soldier captured at Petersburg and held at Danville Prison. First is an ALS from one of his comrades to Chamberlain’s family, signed “Edward,” one page, August 29, 1864, in part: “Your brother was missing July 30th…on the enemy’s works in front of Petersburg with some others and it is supposed he was taken prisoner as he was all right when last seen. We had to fall back and leave them in the hands of the enemy.” A letter in pencil from Chamberlain to his family, signed “O. R. Chamberlain,” one page, October 12, 1864, written from “Danville Prison No. 3,” in part: “Dear friends at home I now try to send a line on to you to let you know that I am well and giting along first rate…I hope soon to be with you.” Both original mailing envelopes are included, with the envelope for Chamberlain’s letter addressed in another hand, suggesting that it was smuggled out of the prison to be mailed. Matted and framed with a plaque to an overall size of 16.5 x 19. In fine condition, with creasing and soiling to envelopes.
