1834 Incorporated in Virginia 29 November 1834. Certs. 2386 to 2390, five shares, issued to “Bearer.” Signed by President Sam G.Moore and Treasurer P.A. Reading. Placer gold mining began in Virginia in 1804, followed quickly by lode mining, and continued with minimal breaks until 1947. This is an early certificate dated at the peak of the Appalachian gold rush. Company was probably located in Farquier County. “The Virginia gold belt (15-25 miles in width and 200 miles in length) passes through southeastern Fauquier County, at the Morrisville/Goldvein area. It is here where approximately 18 gold mines existed….but the Goldvein area did not attract serious prospectors and miners until the early 1800s” [Ref: www.goldvein.com/history.html]. Over 100 mining companies applied to the legislature for licenses between 1832 and 1861. Of these companies, the Franklin Mine was the most famous in Fauquier County [Ref: www.fauquiercounty.gov › Government › Parks & Recreation]. We could find no information on either Sam G.
