Union General William B. Hazen Signed Book Set History of European Morals in Two Volumes by William Lecky, over 900 pages total, 8vo (New York: D Appleton & Co., 1869). An 1855 West Point graduate, Hazen distinguished himself during the Civil War and was made a brevet major general before its end. This lofty rank was temporary and Hazen found himself a Regular Army colonel along the western frontier once peace was restored. These books date to his post-war service and are each inscribed "W. B. Hazen Oct. 1 1869" on the front free endpapers. A different hand also inscribed the first volume with "Ft Hays Kansas 1872 - April". Finally the first volume carries a much later stamp crediting Admiral George Dewey with ownership. It's interesting to note that high-ranking American officers, whether on the plains or at sea, seemed interested in European morality. Worn covers as expected. The Hayden signatures are in very fine condition.
