DAVID HUNTER, Union Civil War General, sanctioned the organization of the First African American Regiment, and presided at the trial of the Lincoln Assassination Conspirators.
September 11, 1861-Dated Civil War Period, Autograph Letter Signed, “D. Hunter,” as Major General of Volunteers, Chicago, IL, 9.5” x 7.5”, Choice Very Fine. War date, orders to members of his staff to report for duty in Chicago, then to accompany him to St. Louis. Included are; Capt. J.W. Turner, Capt. J. Wilson Saffer, Lt. S.W. Stockton, Lt. E.W. Smith, and Surgeon J.K. Barnes.
David Hunter sanctioned the organization of the first African American regiment during the Civil War which caused the Confederate government to label him a felon to be executed if captured. He also presided at the trial of the Lincoln assassination conspirators. There is a small light brown stain, however it does not affect the document.
