ALS signed “Asa Coho,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 7.75, March 15, 1865. Letter to General Baker. In part: “My son…seems considerably disturbed by the notice which he says has been served on Brown that he Brown was to be executed on Friday 17th…I incline to the belief that there is no need as according to my understanding of the accompanying Proclamation ‘Requesting all Deserters’ to return to duty is intended as an antidote for all the Pleadings in behalf of erring & accused…I do not see why it is not lawful for you to accept thieir reenlistment or rend them forward to their former assignment, so that they may have an opportunity to do some good, and atone for the errors into which they have fallen…I hope you will see that those prison pens are immediately emptied into the ranks.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds with a repaired vertical separation passing through the right side, partial separations to adjoining fold, and uniform toning. Accompanied by the newspaper clipping of the proclamation that Coho enclosed.
