Union Co. IL. Neolithic Celt Heads 10,000-4,500 BP
Featured in this lot are these Native American celts attributed to the Neolithic period, circa 10,000-4,500 BC. There are two celts in this collection. One of the celts shows porous surfaces attributed to a hammering tool. The second celt shows a smooth surface, denoting an axe like tool. Celt, a characteristic New Stone Age tool, is a polished stone ax or adz head designed for attachment to a wooden shaft. They were probably mainly used for felling trees or shaping wood. The condition of these celts is good, with no obvious signs of damage. The measurements of these celts range from 7 1/2" Long X 10" Around to 8" Long X 3 1/2" Wide X 11/2" Thick.
