Rare autograph letter signed by Union Brigadier General Joshua Chamberlain of the Maine 1st Brigade, First Division, V Corps. Known as ''Lion of the Round Top'', Chamberlain received the Medal of Honor in 1863 for his efforts on Little Round Top during Gettysburg. He then commanded the Union troops at the surrender ceremony for the infantry of Robert E. Lee's Army at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. Letter, circa 1864, is written to former Secretary of State of Maine, E.B. French. An incomplete letter, one page reads, ''...direct, as I think you wished me to put it into your hands. I have kept it a few days in order to see the officers of the Regt. I have been assigned to the 1st Brigade 1st Division 5th Corps for the present. I feel the effect of my wounds very much but think I can stand it. They did not seem very sorry to see me back. With kind remembrances to Mrs French, very truly yours, J.L. Chamberlain / Nov. 30th Headquarters / 1st Divisions / 5th Army Corps''. Letter on one page measures 5'' x 7.75'' and is glued to a piece of cardboard paper, now quite discolored, measuring 8'' x 10.5'' with uneven edges. Foxing and toning throughout, else very good overall.
