Unidentified artist, early 18th century 71 portraits of church dignitaries, among them Pope Innocent XII and Clement XI and 56 cardinals participating in the conclave of 1700, oil on canvas, each 74 x 60 cm, framed, (Wo). Estimate upon request. Certificate: We thank Dr. Johann Weißensteiner of the Diözesanarchiv der Erzdiözese Wien for his meritorious research on the conclave of 1700. Literature: The collection is listed in Paul Buberl, "Die Kunstdenkmale des Schlosses Ottenstein", Lower Austria, Vienna 1911 (special edition) within the "Österreichische Kunsttopographie", vol. VIII. Provenance: Collection of Count Lamberg, Ottenstein Castle, from the early 18th century to 1934, when Countess Ladislaya Meran née Lamberg sold the castle and the collection came into the possession of Prince Auerperg in Wald Castle near Sankt Pölten, Lower Austria. It is not known what artist(s) Count Leopold Joseph von Lamberg commissioned with the gigantic task of executing the 71 portraits for Ottenstein Castle, one of the largest, most beautiful and historically significant castles in Austria. It is further unclear what models the artist(s) used for the portraits, which are doubtlessly authentic. As Imperial envoy to the Papal See, Count Leopold Joseph had at his disposal all kinds of sources such as oil paintings, drawings, copper engravings. It is also possible that Count Lambert took the painter from Vienna to Rome or that he commissioned one or several of the numerous artists from all over the world, among them also many from the Hapsburg monarchy, living in the European Mecca of artists. The collection comprises the portraits of the following cardinals (nos. 1-68): Acciaioli, Noccolò, Bishop of Frascati (1) Altieri, Lorenzo, Papal Nuncio in Urbino (2) Archinto, Giuseppe, Archbishop of Milan (3) Astalli, Fulvio, Papal Nuncio in Ferrara (4) Barbarigo, Marco Antonio, Bishop of Montefiascone and Corneto (5) Barberini, Carlo (6) Barberini, Francesco, Papal Legate in Romandiola (7) Bichi, Carolo (8) Boncompagni, Giacomo, Archbishop of Bologna (9) Bonzi, Pierre de, Archbishop of Narbonne (not taking part in the conclave) (10) Bouillon, Emanuel Theodosie de la Tour d'Auvergne de, Bishop of Porto and Santa Rufina, Vice-Dean of the College of Cardinals (11) Buonvisi, Francesco (died on August 25th, 1700; from 1675 to 1689, Buonvisi was Papal Nuncio in Vienna) (12) Cantelmi, Giacomo, Archbishop of Naples (13) Carpegna, Gaspare (14) Casanate, Hieronymus, (died on March 3rd, 1700) (15) Cenci, Baldassare, Archbishop of Fermo (16) Cibo, Alderanus (died on July 22nd, 1700) (17) Colloredo, Leander, Great Father Confessor of the Roman Church (18) Cornaro, Giorgio, Bishop of Padua, brother of the Doge of Venice (19) Costaguti, Giovanni Battista (20) d'Adda, Ferdinando, Papal Legate in Bologna (21) d'Arquien, Henri de la Grange (22) D'Aste, Marcello, Archbishop of Ancona, Papal Legate in Urbino (23) del Giudice, Francesco (24) del Verme, Taddeo Luigi, Bishop of Imola (25) Delfino, Deniele Marco, Archbishop of Brescia (26) Durazzo, Marcello, Archbishop of Faenza, Papal Nuncio in Spain (27) Ferrari, Tommaso Maria, from the Order of St. Dominic, Master of the Apostolic Palace (28) Forbin-Janson, Toussaint de, Bishop of Beauvais (29) Fürstenberg, Wilhelm Egon von, Bishop of Strasbourg (not taking part in the conclave) (30) Gabrielli, Giovanni Maria, from Cistercian Order (31) Goess, Johann, Bishop of Gurk, died 1696 (32) Grimani, Vincenzo, from 1708 to his death (September 26th, 1710) Vice-King of Naples (33) Imperiali, Giuseppe Renato, Papal Legate in Ferrara (34) Kollonitz (Kollonitsch), Leopold Karl von, Archbishop of Gran (Esztergom) and Primate of Hungary (not taking part in the conclave) (35) Lamberg, Johann Philipp, Bishop of Passau (36) Le Camus, Etienne, Bishop of Grenoble (37) Maidalchini, Francesco (died 1700, before the conclave) (38) Marescotti, Galeazzo, Pro-Camerlengo of the Roman Church (39) Medici, Francesco Maria (40) Millini, Savo, Bishop of Nepi and Sutri, Papal Nuncio in Spanien (41) Morigia, Giacomo Antonio, Archbishop of Florence, from the Barnabite Order (42) Negrone, Giovanni Francesco, Papal Legate in Bologna (43) Nerli, Francesco, Archbishop of Florence (44) Noailles, Louis-Antoine de, Archbishop of Paris (45) Noris, Enrico, Librarian of the Roman Church, from the Order of the Barefooted Augustinians (46) Omodei, Luigi (47) Orsini, Vincenzo Maria, Archbishop of Benevent (later Pope Benedict XIII (1721-1739) (48) Ottoboni, Pietro, Vice-Chancellor of the Roman Church, Papal Legate in Avignon (49) Pallavicino, Opitius (died on February 11th, 1700), Papal Nuncio in Poland (50) Pamfili, Benedetto, Archpriest of St. John Lateran, from the Order of St. John of Jerusalem (51) Panciatici, Bandino, Datary of His Holiness (52) Paolucci, Fabrizio, Archbishop of Ferrara (53) Petrucci, Pietro Matteo, from the Oratorian Congregation (54) Portocarrero, Luis Manuel Fernández de, Archbishop of Toledo (not taking part in the conclave) (55) Radulovich, Niccolò, Archbishop of Chieti, Secretary of the Congregation of Bishops and Friars (56) Radziejowski, Michael Stefan, Bishop of Ermland (not taking part in the conclave) (57) Rubini, Giovanni Battista, Archbishop of Vicenza, Papal Legate in Urbino (58) Sacchetti, Urbano, Treasurer General of the Curia (not taking part in the conclave) (59) Sacripante, Giuseppe, Prefect of the Congregation of the Council (60) Salazar, Pedro de, Bishop of Córdoba, from the Mercedarian Order (not taking part in the conclave) (61) Santa Croce, Andrea, 1696-1700 Papal Nuncio in Vienna (62) Sousa, Luiz de, Archbishop of Lisbon (not taking part in the conclave) (63) Spada, Fabrizio, Papal Legate in Urbino (64) Sperelli, Sperello, Bishop of Terni, Assessor of the Holy Inquisition (65) Spinola, Giovanni Battista, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church (66) Spinola, Giovanni Battista (the Younger) (67) Tanara, Sebastiano Antonio, 1692 -1696 Papal Nuncio in Vienna (68) 275 School of Valencia, around 1520 Saint Onofrius in a landscape, oil on panel, 62 x 41 cm, framed, (Wo).
