Unidentified Wheellock Pistol with Attractive Wire Stock Inlay
Produced without sights, with a pair of impressed proof stamps present on the left barrel flat and a small indistinct proofmark on the lock plate beside the frizzen spring. This pistol is 23 3/4 inches in overall length and has no other markings present. The lock plate measures 8 1/5 inch long, tapering down at the rear and arched at the bottom to match the contour of the 1 3/5 inch, 4-groove wheel. The trigger guard is a wide band with two engraved lines near the front, and the trigger is fitted with a visible reset spring extending from the tip up the back. Smooth stock, with an iron banded tip, metal headed wood ramrod, a pair of nails securing the barrel, and iron cap on the flared butt, floral wire inlay on the reverse of the wheel and wire dot and scroll accents on the forearm, wrist and butt. Writer cannot verify origin, or date of manufacture of this Wheellock pistol. It could be a Victorian assembly or a 16th century original. Buyer will have to decide!
