Origin unknown, quite possibly a 19th Century Victorian restoration, measuring 32 1/2 inches overall, attached to the tip of the stock is a steel bearded axe blade, measuring 5 1/4 inches long with a 4 1/4 inch cutting edge and wide scallops on the underside. Scroll designs are engraved on the rear 1/3rd of the barrel, with etched vinework on the lock plate and wheel cover and light engraving on the flash pan and cock. Bone inlay is present throughout the stock, with cloverleaf vine designs on the sides and bottom of the forearm, an oval trigger escutcheon, and domed studs on the wrist. The butt is furnished with a 5 inch bone section, with a carved ram's head under a shield on the toe, and the majority of the space filled with a scene of a pair of armored knights, armed with a sword and round shield and axe and heater shield, squaring off, with a pair of lions underfoot. It carries a Stagecoach Gun Museum inventory tag number 136 and is photographed on page 91 of the book. It is listed as "Wheellock Battle Axe".
