Very ornate 12 ga. John Rigby &Co hammer shotgun with checkered straight stock, circa 1871. 30 inch blued Damascus barrels with "JOHN RIGBY&CO 72 S TAMES S ST. LONDON" on smooth concave barrel rib. Two and 1/2 inch chambers. Barrel flats and splinter fore end have serial number as well as barrels. Each barrel has "H.W." on bottom. Splinter foregrip is the early style wedge release. Recoil shields have the ornate and desirable hammer fences. Has finely detailed and tight English scroll engraving on the entire receiver, trigger guard, underlever and fore grip. Bores are very smooth and nice. John Rigby & Co. made some of the finest and most desirable large caliber double rifles and shotguns in the world. Many guns were custom built to customer specifications. This beautiful piece needs some minor restoration to bring it back to its former glory; the checkering could use re-freshening and the hammers are non-matching period replacements. These black powder highly ornate Damasus guns of excellent quality are becoming more scarce as collectors recognize quality workmanship of the Victorian age. Restored or originals of this high grade double bring as much as 3000-7500 in the U.S. and in England. A great restoration project collectible.
