Under Capricorn (Warner Brothers, 1949). Lobby Card Set of 8 (11" X 14"). This rare costume drama by Alfred Hitchcock is one of his lesser-known works, despite the presence of stars Ingrid Bergman and Joseph Cotten. Cotten plays an unkempt stableman who has an affair with Bergman's Lady Henrietta -- resulting in her brother's death and the disgrace of both lovers. (Of course, no one blames the family for hiring an unkempt stableman in the first place; what do unkempt stablemen do other than tempt upper-class women into liberating sexual scandal? These stablemen are unkempt, after all.) When each separately attempts to start over in Australia, their reunion only portends more melodrama and self-sacrifice. The cards perfectly capture the romantic tumult, with the popping pinks and purples evoking a climactic kiss at sunset. The dirt marks on the bottom border of several cards do not detract from the images. While the sixth and seventh cards have been repaired on the back with tape, only the tear on the sixth card is visible from the front. Very Fine.
