Undated, Unmarked Kellogg & Humbert Gold Ingot
Unmarked Kellogg & Humbert Gold Ingot MS Uncertified. The most unusual aspect of this ingot is the lack of an assayer's imprint. We have never seen another ingot lacking the imprint and are unaware if any others were included in the salvage of the S.S. Central America. After turning the ingot several times and examining each of the six sides, our instinct was to say it was a Kellogg product. Apparently that is the same conclusion Christie's came to when they inventoried the Central America ingots and sold many of them in 2000. In the appendix in their auction from December of that year, they list ingot number 792 under the Kellogg & Humbert pieces, without comment.
A small to moderate-sized ingot by the standards of those recovered from the S.S. Central America, it measures 42 x 53 x 20 mm. The top side reads: No 792 / 28.66 Oz / 955 FINE / $565.79. The dollar amount representing the value of the ingot expressed in 1857 dollars. The ingot number, 792, is reproduced at the top of the back side. Two assay chips are taken out of opposing corners. Deeply stained throughout from decades of exposure to the rusting iron from the ship's hull. An interesting and attractively colored Territorial ingot.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
