Undated Kellogg & Humbert Face Plate. It is interesting to consider how much bullion went to the bottom of the Atlantic when the S.S. Central America sank in 1857. There was so much gold on board that its loss was a major contributing factor to the Panic of 1857. That, of course, seems far removed from America in 2005. But the absolute value of the gold contained in the recovered ingots was still so considerable in relation to their collector value that it was more worthwhile (in many cases) to trim the top face of the ingot and re-coin the remaining bullion into restrike gold coins. This is an interesting piece. The face shows several milling marks from coins. This suggests that when the ingot dropped to the bottom of the sea bed coins fell on top of it, leaving the imprint of their edge reeding. The face of the ingot reads: No 997 / Kellogg / & / Humbert / Assayers / 147.56 Oz / 884 FINE / $2696.49. The face is bright yellow-gold with numerous pock marks from the casting process. Several swipes across the surface undoubtedly removed whatever incrustation was present but light hairlines were left in their place.
From The Alan Bingel Collection of Gold & Silver Ingots, Part Three.
