(Undated)<1C> Lincoln Memorial Cent--Foldover Strike, Copper--MS63 Red PCGS. The method of manufacture for a foldover strike was a mystery for many years. It is still not absolutely certain since cents are struck at the rate of 120 strikes per minute, but the most widely accepted theory is that when the blank is fed into the collar, instead of coming to rest against the reverse die, it starts to spin. According to Margolis and Weinberg: "If the blank was spinning while waiting for the strike to occur, it would be in the necessary vertical position to be folded and struck." Needless to say, this is a very rare occurrence. This piece is neatly folded with about 90% of the foldover covering the "lower" part of the planchet. The coin is also off center enough that the date does not show. Full red with the exception of a couple of light, lilac-colored areas on the obverse. A spectacular example of this rare error.
From The Troy Wiseman Collection.
