Undated (1834). C. Bechtler $5 Gold. Kagin-23. Rarity-5+. With 128 G., Star. Plain Edge. Georgia Gold. AU-58 PCGS. CAC.
Soft yellow gold throughout, the present specimen enjoys pastel olive and orange highlights on its pleasing unmarred surfaces. Marks of any consequence evade the unaided eye, and close-in examination with a loupe fails to provide a mark worthy of mention. Currently a Rarity-5+ variety, K-23 is often selected by type collectors to fill the Bechtler $5 slot in their private and territorial gold cabinets. However, more than just type collectors will have a weather eye out for this example when it enters the auction arena. The present coin is the second finest certified by PCGS from among 22 grading events listed by the firm for the variety. There is but one finer PCGS-certified example of K-23 and an NGC MS-62 which is locked away in an advanced collection. The presence here of this visually imposing specimen – CAC loved it too – should signal all serious participants that the time to act is now. We expect strong bidding activity will accompany this otherwise available variety owing to its high Condition Census standing and superb aesthetic charm.
